    About us:

FERVER is an International Non Profit Organization, created on December 3th 2004 under Belgian law by more than twenty private companies from different European Countries. Our members are active in the recycling of waste glass into high quality cullet - a key and valuable raw material used by the glass manufacturing industry to produce new products. Our members are collectively responsible for the collection and recycling of approximately 70% of the total glass waste in the European Union.

Our registered offices are in Brussels, the capital of Europe.

Our association aims to bring together glass recycling industries at the European level.
We represent the profession, particularly towards the European Institutions.

  • To act in the circular economy, saving ressources and reducing emissions

    ENVIRONMENT
Because our member glassrecyclers collect and process waste glass, the amount of glass in the total waste is decreased considerably. Since glass is processed and re-used, it disappears from the waste cycle. It no longer burdens the environment.

During the processing, different other materials are drawn from the glass flow that can be recycled themselves.

    DECREASE CO2 EMISSION

The use of recycled glass cullets leads to a number of environmentally friendly advantages. The decisively lower emission of CO2 implies an active contribution to the protection of our climate and the environment.

    RE-USE
Glass can be molten for an infinite number of times without loss of quality.

    SAVINGS

You can save considerably on energy by using recycled glass cullets for the production of glass bottles and jars instead of raw materials. The melting temperature of recycled glass is considerably lower.

SOME ADVANTAGES OF RECYCLING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
    • A lower emission of CO2: up to 45% less CO2 than when using raw materials in the production of green glass at 90% use of cullets
    • Lower energy consumption: Per 3 % use of cullets, 10% of energy is saved.
    • No or hardly any raw materials need to be dug out.
    • The mountain of waste remains limited.
It is obvious that the use of recycled glass in the production of new glass is increasing.

  • Quality and Pocessing

    QUALITY

Quality starts with collecting the glass and sorting it well.
Sensibilisation and training of suppliers, an organized maintenance service, and custo-mized collection rounds are very important. Storing correctly and in an organized manner is one of the main conditions in order to start the processing in an optimal way.
Well-trained people and state-of-the-art machi-nery give a very high quality finished product.

Quality is like a chain: each link contributes to the final result. All the co-workers are expected to make a contribution.

    PROCESSING

The first phase is the manual processing.

The incoming flow of glass is sorted according to its grain size and divided over different conveyor belts. Then, a first manual sorting round is done and larger contaminants are removed from the flow of glass. Pet bottles, plastic bags, newspapers and magazines, ceramics, stone, porcelain and other foreign domestic waste are carefully removed.

The second phase is a crushing process: a crusher is used to adjust the cullet size of the glass.

The third phase consists of removing all metals, ferrous as well as non-ferrous.

The final, fourth phase is the most complex: optical processing. The cullet are sorted into different flows according to cullet size. Different batteries of optical sorters remove ceramics, stone and porcelain from the flow. This sorting uses CCD cameras and compressed air valves. The cullet are then subject to optical-mechanical colour separation and by means of CCD cameras, the differently coloured cullet are taken from the flow. This fully automated colour separation is merely a colour enhancement, not a full colour separation of mixed-colour cullet.

In-between the different phases of the process, lighter parts such as paper and plastics are separated from the glass by means of air-suction techniques.

An experienced and professional team that supervises and adjusts the process based on the results of the online quality control automatically controls the full process.

In short: highly modern and efficient machinery leads to maximum recycling and high-quality finished products.

Sirkel Materialgjenvinning AS is the only glass recycler of packaging glass in Norway. The company is situated in Fredrikstad, in the south-eastern part of Norway.

The company was founded in 1991 and is owned by the producers. Based on the liability for packaging the producers take responsibility for the glass packaging in the Norwegian market through Sirkel Materialgjenvinning AS.

The collection system is owned and managed by the municipalities. The local collection system includes both recycling stations and home-based collection. The home-based system is the more successful one with a collection rate 30 % higher than the one based on recycling stations.

A mix of glass and metal packaging is collected and delivered to Sirkel Materialgjenvinning AS from all parts of Norway, both from the municipalities and from private businesses like restaurants, hotels etc. Collection is about 90 000 tons per year, with a collection rate of 93 % for glass packaging. The recycling rate is 100 %.

The manufacture of new glass containers is the main area of use for the recycled glass. Glass cullets are also used as raw material for foam glass production in Norway. Sirkel Materialgjenvinning AS owns two production plants for this lightweight construction material, using the brand name Glasopor (www.glasopor.no).

    THE COMPANY

Svensk Glasåtervinning AB (Swedish Glass Recycler) is the only glass recycler of packaging glass in Sweden. The Company was founded in 1986. In 1994, the Swedish Parliament passed a law on producers' liability for packaging. Svensk Glasåtervinning AB was given the responsibility by the producers, which are the owners of the company, to develop a collection system and a recycling plant.

The glass collection system involves some 5000 recycling stations from north to south. Collection is about 200.000 tons per year with a collection rate of almost 100% and a recycling rate well above 90%. In Sweden all the glass is transported to the plant of Svensk Glasåtervinning AB in Hammar, west of Stockholm, the only recycling plant for packaging glass in the country.

The manufacture of new glass containers is the main area of use of the recycled glass,  mainly by the glass manufacturers in Scandinavia but also in the rest of Europe to some extent. Glass woll is also an important area of use. Lightweight foam glass from the neighbouring company Hasopor is another application for the recycled glass.

The conditions of becoming/being a member of FERVER are laid down in our Constitution, in the Rules of Procedure and in some of our decisions. As these documents do not clearly describe the criteria of admission of members, this note aims to clarify it, by defining objective criteria for the evaluation of future members of FERVER.

    Elements present in FERVER Documents

    Requests
    1. Only legal persons can be a member (art. 3 Bylaws)

    2. Members are represented by their formally delegated representatives (Doc. About membership of FERVER, 2009)

    3. The new member must be an autonomous enterprise of the same profession as the others. (Art. 3 Rules of procedure)

    4. The member must operate as core business a glass recycling plant or facility able to process mainly at least one of the following materials like packaging glass, flat glass … from municipal collection, fillers, construction … to produce final products which meet the specifications of the glass industry on a continuous way. The word “recycling” refers to the definition of R5 in annex II of Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain Directives:
R5: Recycling/Reclamation of other inorganic materials. This includes soil cleaning resulting in recovery of the soil and recycling of inorganic construction material

    5. A recycling company can be considered as a potential member of FERVER when no more than 49% of its shares are owned by a glass producing company. (Doc. About Membership of FERVER, 2009 – decision General Assembly 2008)

    Through the bottle bank

The household glass is collected through the well-known bottle banks. The collection is done in collaboration with the national (green dot) systems, municipalities and interurban organizations . This glass only contains packaging glass, such as bottles and jars.

    The single-chamber
The single-chamber container is used for the collection of mixed coloured packaging glass (all colours) or for the selected colour collection.

    The double-chamber
The double-chamber container or double bottle bank contains two compartments. One compartment is used for the collection of flint glass, the other for coloured glass.

    The triple-chamber
The triple-chamber container or triple bottle bank contains three compartments. One compartment is used for e.g. the collection of flint glass, one for green and one for amber glass.

    Through roll on/off containers

Glass waste from filler companies, where the glass is filled with drinks and all kinds of foodstuff, is collected in waste containers. That is the case for e.g. the glass used for soft drinks, beer and water.

  • Virgin products or recycled cullet: the two faces of raw materials in the centuries old story of glass production

    THE HISTORY OF GLASS

Only after the blowpipe was invented (around the beginning of our era), it was possible to give bottles and glasses a different shape. Quickly, people learned to give glass different colours by adding certain substances during the melting process. Glass itself was probably invented around 2500 B.C. in Egypt or Mesopotamia. At first, it was exclusively used for the production of decorative objects. The Egyptians were the first to use glass in utensils. They wrapped hot, viscous glass around a clay core to manufacture bottles and jars for the preservation of liquids such as balms and perfumes.

    THE PRODUCTION OF GLASS

Glass mainly consists of silicon oxide, better known as sand. Merely molten sand is not suitable for the production of bottles. A melting agent is required, i.e. sodium (Na2O) or potassium (K20). In order to obtain processable glass, a solidifying agent is required: calcium (CaO). Since 1830, it is assumed that a ratio of 6 parts of sand, 1 part of soda and 1 part of calcium is a good combination.

Currently, hardly any glass packaging is made on exclusively raw materials. The use of recycled glass cullet instead of raw materials is continuously growing.
A new green bottle can be made from 90% recycled glass cullet without any concessions where shape, colour and quality are concerned. Colourless or flint glass packaging contains approximately 50% recycled glass cullet.

THE USE OF RECYCLED GLASS (CULLET)

Currently, the most important raw material for the production of new glass is “recycled glass”. The recycled glass cullet must comply with the quality standards of the glass manufacturer. Strict norms apply to the presence of ceramics, stones and porcelain, heat-resistant materials, metal, plastics and organic materials. In addition, the cullet must have the right colour, size, composition, etc.

The purer the cullet are, the more cullet can be used for the production of new glass. The use of recycled glass offers the following benefits for glass manufacturers and for the environment:

    - A lower emission of CO2: up to 45% less CO2 than when using raw materials in the production of green glass at 90% use of cullet
    - Lower energy consumption: Per 3 % use of cullet, 10% of energy is saved.

  • Golden Rules to ensure the effective recycling of packaging and flat glass

My bottle is empty : SORTING TIPS

What can you do with empty packaging glass ? As a consumer, you decide what happens to used packaging glass. In Belgium, e.g. we have a well-organised Fost Plus collection system stimulating collection through bottle banks in addition to many alternatives such as door-to-door collection and the very successful container parks. You, as a consumer, have a large influence on the life cycle of packaging glass, so we find it necessary to inform you.

WHAT BELONGS IN THE BOTTLE BANK?

You can take your empty bottles and jars to the glass container. We prefer free of food remainers .

WHAT DOES NOT BELONG IN THE BOTTLE BANK?

    NOT EXAMPLES REASON ALTERNATIVE
Ceramics, stone and porcelain Plates, cups, vases, stones, stone jars, figurines, etc. These materials do not melt in the glass furnace and make new bottles unfit for use. Container park – building waste or coarse waste
Loose metals Batteries, nails, razor blades, spraying cans, tins, etc. These materials do not melt in the glass furnace and make new bottles unfit for use. Container park – building waste or coarse waste
Flat glass Windows, mirrors, wire glass, laminated glass (car windows), tempered glass. Metals do not melt in the glass furnace and make new bottles unfit for use. In addition, they damage the furnace. Container park – metal waste
    Heat-resistant glass

Oven trays, Pyrex, coffee pots, glass cooking plates, furnace windows, protective elements of fireplaces, etc.

The composition of this glass differs from bottle glass.
The melting point of these types of glass is too high so they cannot be melted in the glass furnace. New bottles are unfit for use.

    Container park – flat glass

Lamps Bulbs, fluorescent lamps, car lights, neon tubes. This glass has a different composition and might contain heavy metals. Container park – coarse waste
Container park: fluo = hazardous wastebulbs = coarse waste

    household appliance stores

TV screens television or computer screens They contain heavy metals that disrupt the melting process.

    Container park: amber products

Waste Food and drink, paper, cardboard, wood, plastics, kitchen waste and other material, plastic bags. This type of waste disrupts the recycling process Container park, garbage bag, etc.

My window is broken : SORTING TIPS!

What can you do with broken windows? As a consumer, you can decide on the future of your broken flat glass. A growing number of container parks joint the collection system for flat glass. A thorough training of park guards, an unambiguous sorting message to the environmentally conscious consumer and a well-organized collection and processing system give used flat glass a new life. Because you, as a consumer, have a large influence on the life cycle of broken flat glass, so we find it necessary to inform you.

WHAT BELONGS IN THE FLAT GLASS CONTAINERS?

    • reinforced float glass (wire glass)
    • mirrors
    • double glazing (with or without separators)
    • greenhouse glazing (uncoated)
    • tempered float glass
    • single float glazing
    • coloured float glass

WHAT DOES NOT BELONG IN THE FLAT GLASS CONTAINERS?

    • Other types of glass, such as bottles (packaging glass), lamps, television screens, laboratory equipment, etc.
    • Laminated glass (car windows, bullet-proof windows): these types of glass require special treatment. Mixing them with ordinary flat glass hinders the recycling of flat glass.
    • Ceramic glass (glass cooking plates, furnace windows, etcetera): the composition of this glass is so different from that of usual flat glass that we must keep it separated from this flow.
    • Waste: does not belong in a glass container at all!

  • Did you know?

In many bars and clubs, so-called “illuminators”  are used under the glass bottle in order to illuminate it in darker places. A lighting module and its battery is problematic for the glass sorting because it sticks to the glass fraction.

  • This ATD aims to improve the quality and the quantity of flat glass for recycling by getting a change of the legislation.

The collection rate of flat glass in Europe is currently very low. However, the available quantities are huge.

Furthermore, when this type of glass is collected it is often of a bad quality. Consequently, the recycling rate of flat glass in Europe is also very low.

Currently, we notice that there are very few initiatives of the building & demolishing sector to improve this situation mostly because they are not receiving any incentive from the EU to do so.

One of the first steps would be to organise an event on flat glass in 2016.
+ take initiatives at FERVER level, in cooperation with other federations like Glass for Europe, specific building federations,…

    Start Date: 2015

    Target

In the short term: to organise in 2016 an event on flat glass. In the long run: to improve the quantity and the quality of C&D glass waste by getting a change of legislation.

    Time Schedule

No deadline as it is a long-term action.

This meeting, hosted by FEVE, was the opportunity for both federations to explain how glass collection and glass recycling are working in Europe.

The Korean delegation, composed of representatives of the Korean producer responsibility scheme and authorities, visited Europe to draw inspiration in order to improve their take back scheme and recycling targets. The Korean delegation paid special attention to the discussions regarding the European recycling definition.

Recycling means any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials or substances whether for the original or other purposes. This means that if someone recycles glass into aggregates, the operation will be considered as recycling. However, glass will be lost forever, while this material can be recycled a million times. The federations have proposed that the Commission reviews the recycling definition in order to integrate the aspect of “multiple recycling”.

According to Euwid Magazine, FERVER’s member Rhenus Recycling was seeking a majority stake in Glasrecycling Leeseringen (G.R.L. GmbH), also member of FERVER.

However, the acquisition of a two-third stake of the German glass recycler was awaiting approval from the German Federal Cartel Office.
We learned this morning that the Cartel Office has given its approval to this transaction. The remaining one-third stake will continue to be in the hands of glass producer Ardagh Glass GmbH and, according to Euwid, G.R.L. GmbH will continue to operate under its current name.

The European glass recyclers welcome the publication of the New Circular Economy Package within the timeframe set by the Commission.

Glass is 100% recyclable. It is one of the best examples of the circular economy as currently more than 70% of glass packaging is recycled in a bottle to bottle closed loop. The new targets set by the Commission are high – 75% by 2025 and 85% by 2030 for glass but the glass recycling sector is ready to take on the challenge.

FERVER promotes a high level recycling of glass, which means that the cullet, the final product of the glass recyclers, must be suitable for re-melting activities, such as the production of new glass, foam glass, glass wool or fibre glass. The absence of a clear definition of separate collection and the current definition of recycling could allow the recycling of glass into other applications, such as aggregates. FERVER fears that high recycling targets without adaptation of the recycling definition will lead to an increase of downcycling practices. More generally, there is a lack of clarity in some parts of the proposals that can allow a minimalist implementation of the provisions of the Directive which is not in line with a real circular economy.

Furthermore, the waste legislation is extremely complex. It can be difficult for a company, but also for all players involved in the waste sector, to find their way around such complicated rules and regulations.  The harmonisation of the definitions within all the waste directives is definitely a step in the right direction to make life easier for people having to deal with the waste legislation. In the same way, the harmonization of the rules on the calculation of the recycling targets allows more clarity and therefore removes a first barrier towards a circular economy.

FERVER welcomes the rules ensuring minimum levels of performance for the extended producers’ responsibility schemes as well as the timelines defined to ensure the same level of waste management in all the European Member States within a limited period of time.

    Construction and Demolition Glass Waste

One of FERVER’S challenges today is to increase the collection and recycling rate of Construction and Demolition Waste glass. This type of glass is rarely separately collected and without contamination from other materials which consequently makes its recycling into new glass extremely difficult. However, given the quantities available on the market, there is a huge potential. In its new proposal, the Commission obliges the Members States to take measures to promote sorting systems for construction and demolition waste, at least for glass and other materials listed in the proposal. For FERVER, it is a first step in the right direction.

    End-of-Life Vehicles

There is no modification of the End-of-live Vehicle Directive, besides the provisions regarding the reporting of data by Member States. Glass of the End-of-Life Vehicles is of a really high quality. Making possible the recycling of this type of glass by imposing its pre-dismantling would have been a positive signal of the Commission towards a circular Economy. FERVER regrets that the Commission did not take this opportunity.

Glass is 100% recyclable. It is one of the best examples of circular economy, as more than 70% of glass packaging is presently being recycled in a bottle to bottle closed loop. But there is more to be done. According to FERVER, the Circular Economy Package of the European Commission has to be seen as a means to improve the actual glass recycling rates. In a position paper, FERVER shares its views on the way the current proposal has to be improved to reach that goal.

The Business-Forum company organises the International Exhibition of technologies and equipment for the solid waste collection and recycling Waste Management 2016 on 13-14 September 2016 in Kiev, Ukraine.

World’s leading suppliers of equipment and technologies, financial institutions, Ukrainian solid waste market operators, municipal and state authorities will participate in this event.

FEAD supports this Exhibition as an Official Partner and encourages you to participate in the Event.

Among confirmed participants: Cross Wrap, Enviroplan, Hammel Ukraine, Forrec, GeesinkNorba, HSM, Presona, SSI SCHAEFER, SUEZ, TOMRA Sorting, WTE/EVN Group and others.

Why is Ukraine a promising market for your products and services?

The market situation in Ukraine is positively changing due to several laws that have been implemented this year:

    1. The Association Agreement between Ukraine and EU requires that Ukraine increases its recycling rates, which currently stand at the level of 5-7%.

    2. The World Bank has estimated that the Ukrainian waste management industry needs investment amounting to 14.2 billion Euro, including:

    • modernization of the system of collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste - 5.1 billion Euro;
    • construction of new recycling facilities - 4.3 billion Euro;
    • construction of new landfills - 5.1 billion Euro.

    3. Ukraine needs:

    • 58 700 containers for separate waste collection;
    • to purchase 658 waste collection vehicles;
    • to build 45 waste recycling plants.

    4. Following a process of decentralisation, local authorities may conclude agreements directly, without awaiting a decision by the ministry. Most of local authorities will be present at the Exhibition looking for partners.

The Vanswartenbrouck family (VSB group) is strengthening by joining forces with the global logistics and recycling group Rhenus-Remondis.  For the company led by the Vanswartenbrouck family, this is an important step to grow further on the international (glass) recycling market. "With this partnership, we can continue to focus on innovation and internationalization in the long run. Our employees, suppliers and customers have everything to gain ", says Raf Vanswartenbrouck.

    Permanently ambitious

Raf Vanswartenbrouck: "Three years ago, my brother Steve and I took the decision to draw up a long-term growth plan. Martine Meuws was recruited as an external CEO to guide our management teams. In addition to the German market, we also focus on other European countries with great potential. To strengthen this expansion, we opted for an intensive cooperation with Rhenus-Remondis group. "

Steve Vanswartenbrouck: "A major reason for this choice is their family character and vision of sustainability." The VSB group also focusses strongly on innovation and sustainability. They were the first in the industry to produce CO2 neutral through an innovative production process based on palm oil.

    Further growth

Christoph Bildstein, administrator of Rhenus Recycling, is satisfied: "The future of high-quality glass processing lies in cross-border cooperation. Due to its central location, Belgium plays a key role in our growth plans for the Benelux countries. With this cooperation, we complement each other so perfectly. This also applies to the way the Vanswartenbrouck brothers are leading their company: with a family and future-oriented vision, focusing on partnership. Regarding the merger with the German part of the VSB Group (GRI), the approval of the German competition authority is still required. "

Raf Vanswartenbrouck "We remain active in the company for the strategic support of the group. Thanks to the new collaboration, our employees have new growth opportunities and we can ensure the future of a family business built by four generations. Our customers will be offered a more comprehensive service. Employees, suppliers and customers will benefit from this collaboration. "

Recently there has been a troubling and increasing trend in some new products of the glass industry: the increasing production of non-transparent bottles and especially of so-called “black” glass UVAG (ultra violet adsorbing glass).

Colours of a wide variety have been used for a long time in packaging glass. Recyclers can cope with this as long as the glass is reasonably transparent. This applies to extreme dark coloured glass, UVAG, and to most of the coated or painted packaging glass products.

The international recycling industry here faces a recyclability problem.

Glass becomes increasingly important as a building material; the question of its recycling is therefore more and more significant for the entire building supply chain, especially in the current transitional context towards a more circular economy since the recycling of glass matters from an environmental perspective.

What has been done today in Europe in terms of flat glass recycling? What are the main challenges and opportunities? What would be the right business model?

Marc Uphoff, CEO of Reiling Glas recycling, a company member of FERVER, gave an overview of the flat glass recycling industry in Europe. He discussed the issues that the sector is facing and questioned the way the supply chain can cooperate to improve building glass recycling.

The presentation of Marc Uphoff is available here:  2017-ddr-brussels-reiling-june_14.pptx.

  • This ATD aims at solving the issue of PVB waste.

Currently, it costs a lot to get rid of PVB waste. Solutions have to be developped.

    Start Date: 2017

    Target

Find satisfactory outlets for PVB waste.

    Documents

    • 170511_pvb_presentation.pdf

This project funded by Belgium and Germany intends to examine the possibility to use recycled PVB as a coating binder in textile applications.

FERVER and some of its members individually will take part as industrial partner in this research project under the coordination of the following 3 institutions:

    • CENTEXBEL
    • FILK - ForschungInstitut  Leder  und Kunststoffbahnen
    • Hochschule Niederrhein –Textiel und Bekeidingstechnik

FERVER members get increasing quantities of PVB coming from the recycling of laminated glass. Currently, there are too limited outlets for this material. Therefore, FERVER is interested in any initiatives aiming at addressing this issue by finding new interesting applications for recycled PVB.

This two-year project will start on the 1st of January 2018.

FEVE, FERVER, EXPRA and EuRIC are committed to increasing the quality and efficiency of the glass recycling value chain through separate collection, quality recycling and closed loop manufacturing of glass. To help achieve this, a single, harmonised, ambitious and enforceable calculation methodology for the reporting of glass recycling in all Member States is needed.

All material streams should have an equal level of ambition when reporting recycling rates, regardless of the complexity of different recycling value chains. In the case of glass, FEVE, FERVER, EXPRA and EuRIC have a common understanding that the measurement point is at the input to the cullet treatment plant, as this is the “recycling operation” where waste is “actually reprocessed into products”. They also take the ambition further and propose that non-glass losses and non-targeted materials should be deducted.

Eric Herman has been appointed as director of the Maltha Glasrecycling Group with effect from 1 November 2018. Maltha is part of the Monostreams division of waste treatment and recycling firm Renewi and a joint venture between Renewi and Owens Illinois, a world-leading manufacturer of glass containers. Herman, who is 52, is also responsible for Maltha’s foreign sites.

He will take up the challenge of developing a more explicit positioning for Maltha Glasrecycling and preparing the company for the opportunities that present themselves on the market. “Maltha’s ambition is to become a better and more successful organisation. The circular economy presents opportunities and our existing and potential clients are demanding innovations, which is why we will focus strongly on this area,” Herman says. “It is clear that in today’s society we need to deal with energy and raw materials in a different way. Maltha is responding to this situation by valorising our process flows and using them to create new materials. We have a product with fantastic properties, but what are its potential applications? A highly innovative approach will be required and in some cases that will mean working together with other parties. The flow of glass to the glass factory will certainly continue, but there is so much more that could be done!”

Maltha is setting its sights on further growth in Europe. “In the Netherlands glass collection is well established, but there are still countries where there is room for improvement. We will be investigating where there is particular growth potential for Maltha. Here we are partly dependent on legislation, when it comes to questions like who is the owner of the glass, for example. It is important to establish whether glass is sold on the public market or whether the glass manufacturer is the owner of the glass, as is the case in France.”

Herman studied materials science at Delft University of Technology and started his career in 1991 at General Electric. During his time with this company he lived and worked in the Netherlands, the UK and China, before returning to the Netherlands in 2008, one year after General Electric Plastics had been acquired by Sabic. In 2010 he made the switch from Sabic to A.P. Moller Maersk, a move that saw him leave the chemicals sector for logistics. He also climbed the ladder at this company, most recently holding the post of global Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Damco, the logistics service provider within the Maersk group. He sees his new role at Maltha Glasrecycling as a welcome challenge. “Follow your ambitions, nothing is impossible – that’s something I have experienced for myself over the years!”

Antwerp, Belgium - 15 July 2019, industrial specialty minerals group Sibelco confirmed that it has officially acquired Macoglass S.r.l, a glass recycler located close to Milan, Italy.

The Macoglass plants cover an area of over 50,000 m², with well-advanced technologies for the authorised processing of 210,000 tons per year of various kinds of glass cullet intended for recycling by the glass industry, thereby saving on raw materials and energy.

Eugenio Coti Zelati, owner of Macoglass, said: “The family is very happy to see the business we have built over 3 generations handed over to Sibelco. We are confident Sibelco is the right future owner to further grow and foster the business.”

The acquisition of Macoglass S.r.l will complement Sibelco’s existing presence in the Venice area, enhancing its position in the recycling sector, while improving its ability to partner with local customers to support future growth.

Pieterjan Goedertier, Vice President of Recycling at Sibelco, said: “Our customers face substantial challenges to secure secondary raw materials in the Italian market. The acquisition of Macoglass will allow us to address these challenges and to become a partner in our customers’ growth journey.”

Ilse Kenis, Executive Vice-President of Water and Environmental Solutions at Sibelco, said: “The acquisition of Macoglass supports Sibelco’s ambitious growth strategy and fits ourpurpose of ‘Material solutions advancing life’. Together with Macoglass, we look forward to pursuing further growth in recycling and we welcome the Macoglass team to the Sibelco family.”

Sibelco’s Water & Environmental Solutions Business Unit is structured around two Business Lines – Recycling and, Filtration & Performance Reactants - and is focused on solutions to meet the growing global challenges posed by water scarcity and the need to do more with fewer natural resources.

11 February 2020, materials group Sibelco confirmed that it has acquired two glass recycling activities, Emiliana Rottami and Emill, through bankruptcy auction in the Bologna region of Italy.

Emiliana Rottami is an obsolete glass recycling plant with valid permits. Emill is a glass fines recycling plant. Both were part of the same group which went bankrupt in 2019.

These acquisitions will allow Sibelco to further grow its Italian glass recycling footprint (with Emiliana Rottami) and extend its business model concept through a zero-waste approach (with Emill). They complement Sibelco’s existing plants in Musile, near Venice, and the recently-acquired Macoglass recycling plant near Bergamo.

Sibelco will clean the waste pile at the Emiliana Rottami site and demolish the obsolete plant. Sibelco is also conducting a detailed engineering study for the development of a 250kt brownfield plant with the intention of starting construction by the third quarter of this year. It is also working on a proposal to source material from a stockpile nearby (Via Bonvino).

Pieterjan Goedertier, Vice President of Recycling at Sibelco, said: “Our customers face substantial challenges to secure secondary raw materials in the Italian market. Sibelco has addressed these needs by increasing the capacity of the Musile plant, doubling the operating hours of the Macoglass plant and now by investing in Emiliana Rottami.”

Ilse Kenis, Sibelco Executive Committee member and head of Business Group Glass & Performance Materials, said: “As a company we are committed to supporting the circular economy as it fits our purpose: material solutions, advancing life. Our investments in glass recycling in Italy and other regions continue to demonstrate our support to our glass customers in their quest to source more sustainable materials.”

Sibelco is Europe’s leading glass recycler, processing 1.5 million tonnes of waste glass every year.

Material solution company Sibelco and waste collection & logistics group Mineris Environnement announce the creation of a joint venture for the collection and recycling of flat glass in France known as Recyverre.

Recyverre, in turn, announces the acquisition of GIREV, one of France’s leading recyclers of flat glass. The combined entity will employ around 70 people.

The joint venture brings together Sibelco’s flat glass recycling capabilities at its site in Crouy (Aisne, France) with Mineris’s expertise and capabilities in flat glass collection and transportation. Added to this will be GIREV’s plants in Châtenois (Vosges) and Distroff (Moselle). The combined entity will enable efficiencies in the recycling value chain for flat glass waste and will provide producers of flat glass, glass wool and glass beads with a product portfolio of secondary material.

By taking this initiative, Sibelco and Mineris Environnement wish to respond to a growing demand from glass producers to increase the share of recycled material in their products to lower the use of virgin raw materials and reduce carbon emissions.

The closing of the business combination of Sibelco’s and Mineris’s French flat glass recycling assets will happen on July 1st 2020. The closing of the Girev acquisition occurred on March 10th 2020.

Our world is facing challenges due to the COVID-19 Crisis, impacting our personal and professional lives. It is clear that this changing world is focusing more and more on respect to our nature and its resources.

Also GRL is facing changes but luckily not only due to this Crisis. From now on, it will continue as one brand, as one group which means that  GRL Glasrecycling, Kempisch Recyclagebedrijf, and Transport Vanswartenbrouck will be operating under the name GRL Glass Recycling & Logistics.

    “We think glass”

“We think glass” will be more than ever their baseline in a world where Circular economy creates the basis for a better and healthier world. Because images say more than words, GRL is very happy to share the next step in the history of GRL with you:

Close the Glass Loop is a European industry platform to unite the glass collection and recycling value chain. It aims to improve recycling so that Europe recycles more and better. The initiative gathers twelve European federations representing glass manufacturers, processors, brands, Packaging Recovery Organisations and municipalities.

    This project has many objectives:

    • To increase the glass collection up to 90% by 2030;
    • To increase the quality of recycled glass;
    • To promote selective collection of glass to increase the quality of untreated cullet;
    • To optimize sorting and treating systems.

All this by exchanging knowledge and best practices through a collaborative platform. Stakeholders of the sector can make a difference and improve the circularity of glass in line with EU recycling targets for 2030.

To mark 2022 as the UN’s International Year of Glass (IYOG), the container glass industry, FEVE, is striving to make the future clear, by analysing over 150 trend reports in an effort to understand what has been driving consumer behaviour – and where it’s headed in the years to come. In an ever-changing landscape, the brands that are set to come out on top over the next few years will be those who respond to these shifts in consumer expectations while staying true to their own values.

Making the future clear also means celebrating the solution that’s already in front of us – glass – and its value for the environment, consumers’ health, and product preservation. And there’s no better time than the start of the International Year of Glass to do that.

Join FEVE to celebrate it with an exclusive insight into the findings of their latest report “Future Made Clear: What are shoppers interested in now?” ahead of its launch.

    With 3 speakers:

    • Arnaud Aujouannet, O-I Senior Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer
    • John Parker, University of Sheffield Professor Emeritus of Glass Science and Engineering,
    • Adeline Farrelly, FEVE Secretary-General (moderator)

In June 2022, Glass For Europe released its position paper on the revision of the European End-of-Life Vehicle Directive via an article on its website.

FERVER supports the position of Glass For Europe regarding the importance of a dismantling step before the shredding of a End-of-life vehicle. In order to ensure closed-loop recycling in the glass furnaces, it is essential to integrate a dismantling of the vehicles to ensure a selective collection and a better quality of the glass in order to be considered as Furnace Ready Cullet.

In addition, Glass for Europe clearly explains the importance of design for recycling for car manufacturers to facilitate quality dismantling.

Please find Glass For Europe's position paper with its 5 recommandations hereafter:

    glass-for-europe_position-paper_elv_directive_revision.pdf

FERVER will develop its position paper with its recommandations on the End-of-Life Vehicle Directive revision.
